“Gay Pride Day” was initially celebrated on the last Sunday in June in the United States, but there was a flexible date. The “day” soon morphed into a month-long series of events in major cities. LGBTQ+ Pride Month events attract millions of people globally. Today, parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposiums, and concerts are part of Pride celebrations. Here are some ways you can take part and celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride all month long.
Attend Pride Parades
Throughout June, people from all over the world will be attending many festivals and parades. Attending a parade with or for a loved one who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community or for yourself can be liberating. Not only are you celebrating, but you are setting the example for many others to participate in this month-long celebration.
Create a Pride Employee Network if your company does not already have one! Pride Employee Networks were set up to ensure a safe and inclusive workplace while maintaining alignment with our business objectives, those of our customers and external partners, and the LGBTQ+ community in general. Employees run local chapters of Pride Networks worldwide, so be sure to do your research!
Be an Ally
It can be challenging to know the right way to respond when someone in your life says they are LGBTQ+. Initially, you may feel surprised or excited, confused or uncomfortable, or none of those things. Honesty is essential, but you should also recognize the impact of your response.
Consider Inclusivity In Your Workplace
Is there a culture in your company that encourages inclusivity for LGBTQ+ employees? Would you be able to do anything to make your LGBTQ+ coworkers feel more comfortable at work? Does your company offer benefits to LGBTQ+ employees? Establish a dialogue and provide resources to foster an accepting and valued workplace for LGBTQ+ employees.
